Student of the Year Exhibition sponsored by Roberts Nathan Accountants, Cork
25 January – 17 February 2024. Opening reception Thursday 25 January 5.30-7.30pm
Talk, Saturday 03 February 12pm: The artist Andrea Newman in conversation by Frank O’Connor and Jude Sherry, the duo behind design consultancy anois.org and the project This is Derelict Ireland, an initiative that explores urban dereliction.
Andrea Newman is a visual artist and recent graduate working and living in Cork City. In her recent work she utilises lost Irish language to explore Ireland’s current housing crisis. She is specifically interested in documenting socioeconomic issues and does so through the combined mediums of photography, print, installation and bookmaking. In her degree show the artist embarked on a case study featuring derelict council houses on the north side of Cork City and the irony and classism this represents amidst a housing crisis.
In 2023 she graduated from MTU Crawford College of Art and Design with a first-class honors degree in Fine Art. She was awarded the Ciarán Langford Memorial Bursary with Backwater Artists Group and the Roberts Nathan Student of the Year Award with Lavit Gallery. She is a member of Cork Printmakers and Sample Studios. She most recently exhibited in ORIGINS, The Mill at Lismore Castle Arts, 2023.
Lavit Gallery are delighted to present Andrea Newman as the sole recipient of the 2023 Roberts Nathan Student of the Year Award. This is an annual award given to one or more graduates of MTU Crawford College of Art & Design. In addition to an exhibition at Lavit Gallery the artist receives a cash prize of €1000 kindly sponsored by Roberts Nathan Accountants, Cork. The Student of the Year Award was initiated in 1967 by Cork Arts Society, now trading as Lavit Gallery, with sculptor John Burke as the first recipient and subsequent awardees including Maud Cotter, Eilis O’Connell and Vivienne Roche. Initially the award was solely a cash prize but it later evolved to include an exhibition once a gallery had been established. More recent recipients of the award include Helen Cantwell & Bernie Hennessy, Stephen Doyle, Orlagh O’Byrne & Padraic Barrett and Deirdre Frost.
