Since 1994 Katherine Boucher Beug has been working on a new series of paintings based on the grid. Although the work appears to belong to the minimalist and colour-field traditions, it is also strongly related to landscape, which has always been one of the main sources of her work. She still depends on a ‘drawn’, sensual line, but the lines now describe a ‘charged’ inner area which is held by and separated from the rest of the canvas by bands of colour. The relationships between the different colour and line areas are complex – insisting on a contemplative attitude from the viewer. The work on these paintings is never planned. Layer after layer will be erased before the final state is reached, and most of the paintings are worked on over a six to twelve month period.
